The first CPM was held in Singapore in 2003. Encouraged by its excellent reception, the competition was extended to other parts of Asia. In 2017, CPM extended its footprint to Nepal, with its counterparts in Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Brunei, Cambodia, China and Sri Lanka, the competition was launched in a total of 14 countries and regions.
Join the multitude of participants who rose to the challenge of this photo competition and create photographic masterpieces in line with assigned themes - under time pressure.
The first Canon PhotoMarathon Hong Kong was held in 2009, attracting 300 photography enthusiasts from across the city to compete in a day-long contest that challenged their skills and stoked their inspiration. Today, Canon announced the launch of the 9th Canon PhotoMarathon Hong Kong with its highest quota of contestants yet, inviting 3,000 photographers to join the 2017 edition of this much-acclaimed event.
The competition will return to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre’s Hall 1A on Sunday, 8th October 2017. Contestants in three categories – the Challenge, Open and new Student categories – will accept the "Shoot for Hong Kong" mission by taking photographs based on themes announced on the day of the event while visiting designated checkpoints within a fixed period of time. The Canon PhotoMarathon 2017 Hong Kong will also introduce new elements providing an unforgettable photography experience for participants.
In a continuation of last year’s feature, this year’s competition will extend to night-time once again, allowing Challenge Category contestants to employ scenery changes from day to night and capture the beauty of darkness to create photos with enhanced diversity.
The addition of checkpoints has been an essential element to challenge contestants’ time management skills and provide a real “Shoot for Hong Kong” experience through enhanced community engagement. This year’s secret checkpoint will offer delightful and inspiring experiences for contestants.
Each year, Canon donates the enrollment fee for the Canon PhotoMarathon Hong Kong to a charitable organisation with no deduction. For the 2017 event, Canon Hongkong has partnered with the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG).
Since its establishment in 1960, the HKFYG has been the city's largest organisation providing opportunities and facilities for the social, educational, cultural and physical development of young people. This year Canon Hongkong expects to raise approximately HK$600,000 in enrollment fees from the PhotoMarathon, which will be used to support the HKFYG’s brand-new Digital Adventure-Based Leadership Programme at the organisation’s Leadership 21, located at the Former Fanling Magistracy.
This programme targets secondary school students in Northern District and is designed to connect traditional adventure training with digital technology, enhancing students' leadership and team-building skills and nurturing a generation of young people who are committed to serving Hong Kong.
The event’s carbon footprint has been measured, reduced and offset to achieve a carbon neutral status through the professional support from Carbon Care Asia Limited. The offset is sourced from the YGF Mangshi Household Biogas Tank Project, certified in 2011 under the Gold Standard.
